INSPECTOR GEORGES TURLESQUE of the Marseille police began interviewing Hamida Djandoubi at 4:00 P.M. The strategy had been decided upon in a phone conference with the Salon brigade: the Marseille police would interrogate him only about the accusations of rape and assault on the three teenage girls.

Hamida was more than willing to talk. He admitted to using the club and the belt to hit the girls, to burning them with his cigarettes, and to putting harissa in their vaginas. And he also admitted that the previous night he had used his electrical cord to give the girls shocks to their feet and thighs.

“They kept doing stupid things so I had to correct them,” he said.

When questioned about raping Houria, Hamida was equally candid. Yes, he had forced himself on her the first time. But he insisted she was consenting the second time they had sex.

“Ever since I had my accident, I haven’t been normal,” he tried to explain to the police. “I have these breakdowns now and it’s at those times that I don’t know what I’m doing.”

The police were amazed at how cooperative their suspect was. He freely admitted to everything save for one minor exception. He was vehement that he never prostituted Amaria or any other girl. He said he did bring Amaria to his old foyer to meet his brother and other friends on several occasions. And he did threaten her with prostitution. But he insisted he never forced her to turn a single trick.

Hamida signed his statement at 6:15 P.M.

The police let him sit in a cell. As soon as Constable Jean Thain and other officers from Salon-de-Provence arrived, they’d drop the body on him.
